*sigh* If you zoom in, it's actually easy to see some sharp cuts on his hat and white-ish lines (not on the hat), indicating some photoshop magic. Or maybe you didn't use the specific program of "Photoshop", and that's why you say you didn't use it.

I'm guessing this picture was created by having Mario do a double jump past Snake as he lifted up the box (Hence the drop-through platform).
It doesn't look photoshopped to me at all, especially because I've seen those sharp edges and whitish lines you speak of in many of my own screenshots.

This requires no Photoshop at all. I even replicated this snapshot on my own copy of Brawl, and it's not that difficult to do, actually; it just requires really good timing. I just had Mario doublejump backwards into Snake's box while he lifted it up, like Rakurai said.
I kinda feel sorry for Mario... now he has to go around with that giant wedgee!
