Alex/Sora presents: a personal message about the localization of video games (6) +1

This time, my latest upload acts as a mere excuse to talk a bit rather than a snapshot itself.

(I start by saying, I've put such a huge amount of tags due to the snapshot's relevance to an equivalent amount of topics - more than usual, that is.)

Sonic and the CDs are supposed to reference "Sonic [the Hedgehog] CD", where our debate starts from.

You all should know what this means in term of localization history, but if you don't, I'll do it for ya. When "Sonic CD" came out, its soundtrack has been kept unchanged in Japan and Europe but since America, according to SEGA itself (see Wikipedia article), "wasn't ready for techno", the whole OST has been altered for the release in that region, as well as the speed of each FMV in the game in order to fit the background music. Though in my opinion "Sonic Boom" is still an awesome song, this change alone lead GameFan Magazine into giving a 100% score to the J/EU version and a 70% score to the US version, and according to an editor, "it was the biggest injustice in localization history".

I agree with this statement, but... what about today?

You should know I'm European, and therefore I got used to "injustices in localisation history" that I think to be a lot worse than a "simple" change in a game's soundtrack.
I'm talking about exaggeratedly delayed games, or as in worse cases, even cancelled releases.
All this, just because I live in Europe, the same Europe in which Kirby Super Star Ultra, as well as Kingdom Hearts REChain Of Memories, still has to be released; the same Europe in which Dissidia Final Fantasy will be released just-a-little-less-than-a-whole-year after its Japanese release; the same Europe in which WarioWare Twisted, Drill Dozer and Chibi-Robo Park Patrol, just to name a few, have never been released, and never will; the same Europe in which Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG have first been released, for DS and Wii respectively, more-than-TEN-years after anywhere else; and yes, of course, the same Europe in which Brawl has been released around the same time the rest of the world was already entering the second organized tournament (it's not just a complaint, go and check the "Brawl Central" site).

In the snapshot, Charizard is shown as a dragon, referencing the Spyro the Dragon series (though Charizard is actually orange, adult and even bipedal) with its first two titles being available in the US Playstation Store while here only a glitched version has come out, and even just for about 4 days. Oh, and Crash 2 is out in the US, too. It's been a year since its US re-release, but in Europe there's still no trace of it.

I know there are a few exceptions like Trackmania DS, released in Europe before its US release, or CTR - Crash Team Racing, which is (as for now) an exclusive to our PSN, but these are just two pearls lost in a polluted sea known as game localization.

That's all I had to say. Many can say it's just a childish complaint, but I just had to tell what I'm feeling, so I did.

Now I'd just like to see your comments about this: what you think about localization, about my whims... you can even shout "get a life" or flag my snapshot, I won't complain.
I encourage everyone who has read this stuff I've just written to comment, whether you're in agreement with me or not, or you're either European, American or (why not?) Japanese.

Discuss.

(DISCLAIMER: this complaint wasn't meant to offend anyone in the Brawl Snapshots community, nor to anyone else. This is meant to talk about game localization itself.)

Yeah, I feel sorry for you guys. (But like you said, you *HAVE* gotten games before the U.S. - "Mario Kart Wii" and "Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon" are other examples that I definitely know of.)
Alex*Sora*89 on 2009-05-12 at 14:39 flag link:
I know... maybe Mario Kart Wii has been released earlier in order to balance the Brawl matter.
But the point is, I don't want games to be released here before anywhere else, though I know worldwide releases like Sonic Unleashed are something almost impossible to do.
My dream is about games being released at about the same time, like, a game released in Japan first coming out in the US one month later and after another month it gets available in Europe.
Delays as in Brawl's and Dissidia's cases are just ridicolous, without talking about Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG.

However, Starry Might, thanks for your support. You're nice as always! ^_^

It would be tough I image to have to wait even longer for certain games. It's too bad you guys have to put up with it. I know that European games have to be translated in six or so languages, but sometimes I wonder if the people working on it are a bit more lazy then they should be.
Alex*Sora*89 on 2009-05-14 at 13:53 flag link:
I don't think they're actually lazy, NintendoMania. They're just strategically planning each release date (or maybe it's just my imagination, since releasing Brawl - a home-console game - in Europe during summer isn't a really smart move in my opinion, but whatever... they wanted us to strive for it, and they did it).
It's funny how Europe, being the last region in which games are released after Japan and the USA, is literally the "Third World in gaming". The pun is also referred to the shameful suckage of today's European PSN update: no PS1 games and no PSP content at all.
And it's even my birthday, the 14th of May, thus meaning, as the "89" in my nickname suggests, that now I'm 20.
Such an awful update for such a day (for me).
Oh well. I just hope tomorrow's Virtual Console update will be better, something as the very first Super Smash Bros. (but I think that's hoping too much).

What did you lucky guys get today?
Alex*Sora*89 on 2009-05-15 at 09:38 flag link:
I've seen the US update. While Europe didn't get anything for PSP, the States got Spyro 3. What do I have to think now? We don't have ANY of the original, awesome Spyro trilogy, while the US have the whole Crash and Spyro sagas except CTR, which I don't think will remain an EU exclusive for long. Now please, Sony, look at this snapshot and... oh, whatever. They won't notice it anyway.

i feel your anger/pain also how long did it take for your to write this (including tags)
Alex*Sora*89 on 2009-06-04 at 10:00 flag link:
Well, here's my secret: I have a txt document fullfilled with lines of tags separed by commas, ready to be used.
However, other than that, this stuff has taken me a lot of time but I went on writing anyway due to how much this matter is important to me.

EDIT:
By the way, HELL YEAH! Yesterday the European Playstation Store released probably one of its greatest titles, if not the greatest.
None other than Final Fantasy VII itself!
I've never been given the occasion to play it, so... good thing I'm currently playing Crisis Core. After that, it's-a-download time!
Alex*Sora*89 on 2009-06-19 at 16:25 flag link:
Well, after Final Fantasy VII the first Super Smash Bros. has been released on the European Virtual Console.
I thought I could stop complaining, but then I realised the US got Metal Gear Solid while European gamers don't even know when it will be released, or even if it will.

The thing that drives me mad isn't the lack of releases, but the lack of release dates. Things have been getting better lately, sure, but I'm pretty sick of wandering within oblivion.
And I think US gamers would agree.
