There was a Fire Emblem Anime which in the first episode, Marth and his mom got attacked. Marths mom teleported him away while she was killed. Also, that ring that comes around Marth when he is teleported, is the same ring in his entries in Brawl.

^I've never played any of the series (blasted Nintendo, and their Japan-only releases!), so I don't know how it happened. Do you learn it early in the game, or is it a something that'd be a major spoiler? If it's the latter, then don't tell me.
^ I won't say when it happens but I can tell you that it's not a ZOMGWTFBBQ-HOLY-BALLS spoiler like Aearis' death in Final Fantasy 7. It is sad, though.

Fire Emblem does not require the series to be played in order. In fact, the DS remake of the original game, I would not recommend to newcomers. I would start with Path of Radiance or FE7.
