How to Tag Snapshots and Stages
Tagging your snapshots and stages properly helps people find your work easily. Properly tagged snapshots will show up in the Snapshot Index and tag pages.
Also, you can help the community by tagging other people's snapshots. Get a random untagged snapshot, tag the snapshot properly, and then click 'Next' to tag another one.
A tag is just a word (or string of words and spaces) that serves to organize snapshots and stages. If you see a tag on a snapshot or stage, you can click on it to get all the other snapshots or stages that have that tag. For example, all the snapshots with the tag "eat" appear together on a page.
A tag can be anything you want. It's just a string of words and spaces. It does not have to exist already.
How to Tag Snapshots
1. Tag all characters, all pokémon, the stage, and all items
All characters and items that are visible should be tagged. The stage that the snapshot was taken in should also be tagged. If your snapshot is in a custom stage, or part of subspace emissary, use those tags.
To find the official names of a character, pokémon, stage, or item, that you're not familiar with, just check out the Snapshot Index. If that doesn't help, there is always Google and Brawl itself, which has menus for all characters, stages, and items.
If a character or item is just barely visible in a snapshot, use your own judgement on whether it needs to be tagged or not.
Example: sonic, zero suit samus, bunny hood, green hill zone, metagross
2. Add any featured tags that apply
If a character is doing a final smash (the power you get from a smash ball), add the tag with final smash. If it's a close-up where someone's face takes up most of the screen, add the tag close up. You can see the other featured tags in the Snapshot Index.
3. Other tags
Add any other tags that you think would help someone find the snapshot in the future. For example, if the picture has something being eaten, tag it with eat. Or if the picture has some boss or pokemon whose name you know, tag that too.
Common Tagging Mistakes
1. Too many commas
Sometimes someone tags their snapshot with final, smash. This is incorrect: the comma denotes the separation between two different tags. So by typing "final, smash", you will actually tag you snapshot with two separate tags: "final" and "smash". Accordingly, your snapshot will NOT show up on the final smash tag page.
Incorrect: final, smash, zero, suit, samus, yoshi's, island
Correct: final smash, zero suit samus, yoshi's island
2. Not enough tags
Incorrect: super sonic
Correct: super sonic, sonic, final smash
3. Misspellings
Incorrect: dee dee dee
Correct: dedede
Equivalent Tags
You might call her zero suit samus and someone else might call her zamus, but both tags mean the same thing. Here at Brawl Snapshots, we have solved this problem! Certain tags (such as zero suit samus, zero suit, and zamus) have been linked together so that they are equivalent. This means that when you click on any one of those tags, you will see all the snapshots that are tagged with at least one of those tags.
Example 1: soccer ball and soccerball are equivalent.
Example 2: captain falcon and falcon are equivalent.
Equivalent tags are displayed at the bottom of the tag page for each tag that has equivalent tags.
You can help the community immensely if you identify more tags that should be equivalent, and contact us.
